Carisoprodol®
Muscle relaxant - Oral. Tablets 350mg
Uses
Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant, used to treat the pain and stiffness
of muscle injuries, including strains, sprains and muscle spasms.
How to take this medication
This medication may be taken with food or immediately after meals to
prevent stomach upset. Take this as directed. Do not increase your dose
or take it more often than prescribed. This medication provides
temporary relief and must be used in addition to rest, physical therapy
and other measures. Because this medication makes an injury temporarily
feel better, do not attempt to lift or exercise too soon. Follow your
doctor's instructions for recovery.
Side effects
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in
intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can
determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Carisoprodol. Side
effects may include agitation, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, facial
flushing, fainting, headache, hiccups, inability to fall or stay asleep,
irritability, light-headedness upon standing up, loss of coordination,
nausea, rapid heart rate, stomach upset, tremors, vertigo, and vomiting.
Allergic reactions usually seen between the first and fourth doses of
Soma in patients who have never taken this drug before include itching,
red welts on the skin, and skin rash. A more severe allergic reaction
may include symptoms such as asthmatic attacks, dizziness, fever, low
blood pressure, shock, stinging of the eyes, swelling due to fluid
retention, and weakness.
Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of any liver or kidney
disease, blood disorders, porphyria, asthma, and any allergies. When
rising quickly from a sitting or lying position, dizziness or
lightheadedness may occur. Change positions slowly. Use caution engaging
in activities requiring alertness (such as driving) if this drug makes
you dizzy or drowsy. Limit alcohol intake while taking this medication.
This drug should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Soma is excreted into
breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Drug interactions
This medication may intensify the effects of alcohol. Be careful
drinking alcoholic beverages while you are taking this medication. If
Soma is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be
increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check
with your doctor before combining Soma with antidepressant drugs such as
Elavil, Tofranil, and Nardil; major tranquilizers such as Haldol,
Stelazine, and Thorazine; sedatives such as Nembutal and Halcion and
tranquilizers such as Librium, Valium, and Xanax.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. Keep this and
all medications out of the reach of children.
